Living with chooks and the feral rabbits trying to grow vegetables can be a trial and frustration … oh forgot when the sheep get in there goes the lot. So for a while now we have been planning an enclosure to keep the critters out and allow for us to actually eat the stuff we grow! Helen also wanted raised beds, which are really necessary the soil is pretty useless for anything but grass as it is all shale just below the surface.
The problem (always) is that nothing is flat here so job one was making a level spot, the final result may not show it but there were about 50 scoops of the top removed to get a 4×4 meter square reasonably flat, then there was the boundary sleepers which all needed to be joined (remember the slope issues) in the course of building the main house water pipe was broken and the garden water one too (it is dam water dropped into a tank for outside use). Then we had to build and fill all of the beds, thank goodness for a tractor huh! 8 cubic meters of vegemix, when we did that had to fix the sleepers as the tractor disturbed them, and yes I remembered NOT to do the coach bolts until that was done. Then it was on with the cage and we are now ready to grow vegetables that we will eat!
The tomato seedling was ceremoniously planted as the first resident (and was pelted by hail not long after when we had a humongous storm).
