So will I (continue to loan via Kiva). In the vast majority of cases, the borrowers have no other way to borrow the money they need. The normal avenues are closed to them due to their economic circumstances.
The fact that Kiva borrowers return for future loans tells me that they understand the need to pay interest and that the rate they paid was acceptable given the results they experienced from earlier loans.
A long time ago, I was paying 12% interest on a mortgage, because that’s what I could get at the time. It was acceptable to me because of the results (a house). Of course, I refinanced at lower rates as soon as I could – something I believe the Kiva borrowers do too from time to time. I’ve had loans get paid in full well before their eventual due date.
